Boulder Creek Golf Club

With a rental car, the drive to Boulder Creek wasn’t a problem. About 25 minutes driving like I normally do on the freeway! When I got to the course I wasn’t greeted in the parking lot, which is normal for most courses I have played in Las Vegas. When I checked in the guys in the shop were really nice. They told me I was ready to go and my bag was already setup on a cart. There were no water bottles in the cooler like you would hope in 105 degree weather, but in this economy many courses are probably scaling back a little. They do have color GPS on their carts which had pinpoint accuracy all day, so that was nice and it made playing a little quicker. It also gives you distances to hazards as well, so they are a little easier to avoid.

As far as the course, during August you would figure that it should be dried out, but it wasn’t. It was lush green and I was really impressed about how nice it really was. The fairways were groomed and took good sized divots. So much that I needed to replace my sand and seed bottles at the turn and I was playing as a single. There are also no houses on the course at all, which is a major plus. It is so much better to spray one OB and not have to worry about breaking any windows or ending up on the news.

Other than some extra ball marks that could have been avoided by careless golfers, the greens are really pure. They hold, but putt smooth like country club greens; they are Bent Grass which are the best kind of greens. You do have to watch out for the valley; everything breaks towards the dry lake bed. If you look at the course when you are there it is kind of built on a hill and everything slopes toward the bottom.

After my round, I stopped at the range and practiced for a minute to work out some driver kinks. An attendant drove up and said it wasn’t a problem. They have a really nice crew out there. When I drove up to the clubhouse, my bags were cleaned and I gave the attendant a $5 spot. I had a great time and would do it again. Maybe next time I can try to get in all 27. Boulder Creek is awesome. For the value it might be one of the best courses in the city. It is about a 30 minute drive from the strip, but once you get out there it is well worth it. The course is built in the middle of the desert. There isn’t a single house on the course, so you are really playing in what feels like the middle of the desert. There aren’t any major elevation drops, but the feeling of playing in the desert with rolling hills is a nice contrast from all grass courses. They also have GPS on their carts which made things go a little easier.

We played at 6am with about a club wind in the middle of summer. The front nine was nearly perfect. The back nine got a little hot, but with the slight wind it was really nice. The course was in great condition. The fairways were smooth and you could take large divots; the greens rolled really pure as well. They have Bent greens so you know it must be good. To be honest for a public municipal course…it was pretty cool.

We played all three nines: Desert Hawk, Coyote Run, and Eldorado Valley. Even though I play it quite a lot when I come to Vegas, my personal favorite is Coyote Run. They all have some really cool holes and then others I struggle to make pars on, but honestly….all three are good nines.

Another cool thing about Boulder Creek is that it is right next to a small private airport. These small custom planes and helicopters were flying around during the round and they do skydiving. A couple of times during the round we would look up and see skydivers; they looked like they were going to land on us, but would veer off to the distance and land in the airfield. Pretty cool!

I would recommend playing Boulder Creek any time you are in Las Vegas. You can try to mix and match the nines so it feels like a different golf course each time. I would be hesitant to take a cab as a rental car is a must. Thanks for recommending this course a couple of years ago!
